Upgrading

Note for gNewSense 2.x users

gNewSense 3 is based on Debian GNU/Linux, while gNewSense 2 was based on Ubuntu. Because of this change introduced in gNewSense 3, users of gNewSense 2 cannot use the update manager to upgrade. If you are using gNewSense 2, you will have to follow the Installation process as a new user.

How to find the version of your installed gNewSense distribution

To check the current version of your system go to Applications ▸ System Tools ▸ System Monitor and select the System tab.

NOTE: The following upgrade steps need review.

Upgrade between minor versions

To upgrade between minor versions (e.g. gNewSense 3.0 to gNewSense 3.x), follow these steps:

  1. Open a root terminal in Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Root Terminal

  2. Update package index:
    • # apt-get update

  3. Install updated packages
    • # apt-get upgrade

Upgrade between major versions

To upgrade between major versions (e.g. gNewSense 3.0 to gNewSense 4.0), follow these steps:

  1. Read the release notes for the newer release!
  2. Open a root terminal in Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Root Terminal

  3. Using a text editor, modify /etc/apt/sources.list to use then new repositories.
  4. Update package index:
    • # apt-get update

  5. Install updated packages, removing packages if necessary:
    • # apt-get dist-upgrade
