In gNewSense, there is a tool which helps you configure which program to start when GNOME starts, or even remember which application(s) you were running before you close your session. You can find this tool in System > Sessions.

Startup Programs

In your sessions preferences window, you can choose which program to run (or not) when GNOME starts. Here are the programs started automatically by default:

You can safely uncheck the following items if you don't need them:

Config file

If you prefer editing the config file directly, its location is ~/.gnome2/session.

Session Options

This tab can make GNOME automatically remember running applications when logging out, so that when logging in again, they are also started as if you never logged out.
