Mailing List Help
There are two ways by which you may subscribe to any of the gNewSense's mailing lists.
Through the web interface.
Subscribing through the web interface
This is the simplest way to subscribe to a mailing list. Go to this link and choose the mailing list you want subscribe to :
Hit on the respective link of the mailing list you want to subscribe to. For instance if you're going subscribe to gnewsense-users list. Hit on the gnewense-users link. You will then be given a digital form to fill out. Duly read the form and fill in the relevant details and hit the Subscribe button when you're done. The subscription process isn't over yet, you have one more step. Get to your inbox, you must find a email from the respective gNewSense mailing list. You will a find a confirmation link in that very mail, copy and paste this link in your web browser. That is it, you're subscribed.
Subscribing through Email
Subscribing through email might not look simple at first, but once you learn how to do it, I bet you will stick to managing your mailing list subscriptions through email.
Let me assume that you desire to subscribe to the gnewsense-users mailing list. All you got to do to subscribe is to send an email to email@example.com . After some time, you will get an email from gNewSense informing that you need to confirm you subscription to the mailing list. Just push the reply button and send the mail back. You don't have to type anything in the reply, just reply back. That is it. You have subscribed to the gnewsense-users mailing list. A Welcome to gNewSense mail will later be dropped in your inbox, this mail will contain a password (it can be changed) you need to use in order to change your preferences and settings with regard to the mailing list.
Tweaking the mail list options
Once you have subscribed to the mailing list, you will obviously find yourself in a situation wherein it is needed to change/tweak the options or the password or you want to unsubscribe ( due to some strange reason). Again you may do these tweaks straight from the web interface or through email.
Tweaking through the web interface
Go to the same link from where you subscribed to the list from the web interface. This link will be useful in finding the right link :
After you have found the right link, go there and scroll down to the bottom of the page. You will find a button labeled Unsubscribe or edit options, please hit on the button. In the next page, give your email address and password and hit Log in to start tweaking your preferences of the options of the respective mailing list. Forgotten your password ?, scroll further down and click the Remind button to get reminded of your password through email. If you want unsubscribe from the list, hit on the Unsubscribe button, an email will be sent to your inbox regarding the unsubscription.
Tweaking through email
Again, I assuming that the mailing list that you want to tweak is gnewsense-users. To do your tweaking through email, all you have to do is send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org containing the email commands, these email commands help you to tweak your mailing list options. Described below are commonly used used commands to change the options.
You may write the email command(s) anywhere - in the subject or in the main body of the email, but make sure that there is only one email command per line. Text other than the email commands will be ignored.
- This command retrieves your password for the respective mailing list.
- password <old_password> <new_password>
This command changes the password to <new_password>, note that it is required to mention your old password in place of <old_password>. If you have forgotten the password, use the previous command - password, to retrieve the presently set password.
- set show
- This one lists the current preferences set for all the options.
- set authenticate <password>
When you want to tweak any of the available options, it is a prerequisite to authenticate with your password before you proceed. This command achieves this.
- set delivery <on/off>
- When you go on a long vacation, it is quite obvious that you wouldn't want to get emails from the mailing list. This command enables you set the delivery on or off.
- set digest <plain/mime/off>
The digest feature compiles the messages/emails sent to the mailing list into a single email containing all the messages/emails and sends this single compiled email (the digest) to you. To enable the digest feature give plain as the argument for this command. If you desire to get a MIME digest instead, give mime as the argument. If you're someone who wants to read the message/email as soon as it is sent to list, then switch off the digest feature by giving off as the argument for this command.
- set reminders <on/off>
This command is helpful if you have the knack to forget passwords. When the remainder is on, you get a monthly reminder of the password that is used for the respective mailing list. Switch it off, if you don't want to get reminded about your passwords.
- unsubscribe <password>
- There will be time when you want to move out of the mailing list. To unsubscribe from the mailing list, use this command.
- After you have typed all the commands in your email to
email@example.com , use this command to specify that the email commands end here.
- Use this command to get an exhaustive list of commands that are available for the mailing list system.
- set help
This command will retrieve all the set commands used to tweak settings of you mailing list options.
