You bought a MacBook and got sick of the proprietarium?

I installed gNewSense on a Apple MacBook 4th generation with the whole disk option.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Burn out and boot up gNewSense Live CD by pressing down the "C"-key on the keyboard right after the "dong" on boot.
  2. After boot, run install as usual. I did not do anything in particular during the setup, and I choose to use the whole disk.
    1. NOTE: I have read some place that using the whole disk option can totally ruin the disk since it wipes out the EFI. This did not happen with me, but with Debian the MacBook could not find the harddrive after install.

  3. After install, eject the CD and reboot into gNewSense
  4. And you are free to breath, finally. Now just read one to see what needs a little bit shaping.

Mapping right-click

Open your .Xmodmap-file in your home directory and input: "keycode 115 = Control_R" makes the left "cmd"-button right-click.

If sound is not working

If it looks like the system seems to recognize the sound card and the volume applet in the panel is showed, but no sound is heard, it is probable that newer sound drivers are needed. To get them, just run the following in terminal:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant alsa-source
sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source
sudo module-assistant a-i alsa-source

Also try to plug in and plug out some headphones to see if that helps.
